What it covers

The document establishes common expectations for the performance, rating and testing of battery chargers built for utility service. It covers how a charger is rated, the output and regulation characteristics it should deliver when it floats and recharges a battery while also carrying the connected direct-current load, the conditions it must tolerate on the supply side, and the kinds of tests used to demonstrate performance. Manufacturers use it to design and prove their products, utilities and plant owners cite it in purchase specifications, and testing engineers consult it when they check charger performance and look for direct-current ground problems during commissioning and maintenance. A later NEMA document on related power equipment exists, and the two are often read side by side. This page describes the document in original words and does not reproduce it.
